The 20th anniversary of the election and enthronement of Pope and Patriarch Theodore II of Alexandria and All Africa was celebrated with great solemnity in Alexandria on October 9, 2024. The milestone was marked by a Patriarchal Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Theotokos, attended by numerous hierarchs and bishops from across Africa and Alexandria, as well as representatives of the Greek State, including Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgios Kotsiras.

In his heartfelt homily, Metropolitan Nikodimos of Memphis highlighted the extensive missionary work and initiatives led by Patriarch Theodore II, emphasizing his role in strengthening ties with other Christian Churches and in restoring historical ecclesiastical sites, such as the Holy Monastery of St. George in Cairo. He placed special emphasis on the Patriarch’s efforts in Africa, including the establishment of new ecclesiastical provinces and the ongoing development of church structures. The Patriarch’s dedication to improving the lives of local communities has earned him the affectionate title of the “Patriarch of Love.”

In response, Patriarch Theodore II expressed his gratitude to his colleagues and supporters, reaffirming his commitment to missionary outreach and aiding those in need. He acknowledged Greece’s support for the Patriarchate and underscored the importance of cooperation with Egypt, which he fondly described as his second homeland.

Following the Liturgy, a tribute to the Patriarch was presented by members of the Offikialioi of the Patriarchate. The day’s events continued with a reception at the Patriarchal Palace and an official luncheon hosted at the Greek Community of Alexandria’s lounge, organized by Ekaterini Sofianou. The luncheon was attended by representatives of the Church, officials from Greece, Cyprus, and Egypt, as well as members of the local community.

Throughout the celebration, speakers commended Patriarch Theodore II’s tireless work, emphasizing the significance of preserving the historic roots of Hellenism and Orthodoxy in Africa. They also acknowledged the challenges faced by the Church of Alexandria, particularly in times of geopolitical instability, and praised the Patriarch’s efforts toward fostering unity and progress within the Orthodox Church.

The 20th anniversary of Patriarch Theodore II’s enthronement provided an opportunity to reflect on his substantial contributions to Africa and to honor his unwavering commitment to missionary and humanitarian work. In the presence of clergy, political leaders, Greek Communities leaders and the faithful, the celebrations delivered a powerful message of love, solidarity, and dedication, underscoring the ongoing mission to uplift the spiritual and social life of communities across Africa.
